Cross-platform functionality: HTML5 to improve BYOD initiatives

As BYOD continues to make waves in the business world, many administrators are looking for ways to make their current mobile initiatives that much better. Although these solutions can range from security tips to user tricks, one of the most impactful ways company leaders can bolster their BYOD programs is by leveraging the advantages offered by HTML5.

When it comes to effectively connecting and collaborating with colleagues within a mobile initiative, Verivo Software chief marketing officer Christopher Willis noted that a number of challenges can arise. Employees are carrying out a larger number of processes via their mobile devices, including those associated with accounting, customer relationship management, inventory and transaction processing. With these cases, staff members need the most up-to-date information possible, and they must be able to access the range of applications on the device of their choice.

Cross-platform functionality: A critical aspect of BYOD success
This is where HTML5 becomes such an invaluable aspect of a BYOD program. Due to its cross-platform functionality, employees can leverage their smartphones, tablets and laptops to open and collaborate within HTML5 apps, no matter the operating system the device runs on. As such, more developers and utilizing the language to create enterprise-level apps. In fact, the IDC forecasted that by next year, 80 percent of all mobile apps will have an HTML5 framework.

Overall, WatchDox chief product officer Ryan Kalember advised that administrators ensure that it is not only possible for their workers to access mobile apps on any device they choose, but that it is easy for them to do so. The best way to ensure this functionality is with HTML5. Without cross-platform abilities in place, companies BYOD programs will suffer.

"If employees aren't able to access, work with and collaborate on a document with their preferred device, mobility falls short," Kalember said. "Having to convert file types or use multiple apps to edit or annotate a document disrupts workflows and decreases productivity."

Instead, when decision-makers are crafting and improving their mobility initiatives, they must include HTML5 in their considerations. Not only will leveraging HTML5 improve the development process, but it will enhance capabilities throughout the app's lifecycle.

"As mobile devices become further embedded in the world in which we live, enterprises will be tasked with delivering applications that move with the wave of HTML5 transformations," Willis wrote. "Undoubtedly, HTML5 will continue to develop and improve, ushering in a new way to develop a mobile app once that runs on multiple device types."
