FinancialChart for MVC is our industry-specific control that has been developed specifically for the finance industry. Derived from the MVC Edition FlexChart, this versatile data visualisation control has built-in capabilities to visualize and analyze financial data. FinancialChart also provides powerful interaction tools like Line Markers to display data at cross section, range selector to drill through financial data over a period. In this blog we will understand how to:
The easiest way to get started with FinancialChart is to use the C1 ASP.NET MVC application template.
Add Finance library to project. This above step does the following:
C1.Web.Mvc.LicenseDetector, C1.Web.Mvc
C1.Web.Mvc.Finance.LicenseDetector, C1.Web.Mvc.Finance
<add namespace="C1.Web.Mvc" />
<add namespace="C1.Web.Mvc.Fluent" />
<add namespace="C1.Web.Mvc.Finance" />
<add namespace="C1.Web.Mvc.Finance.Fluent" />
Registers resources inside _Layout.cshtml. Any view using this layout file will be able to use the resources.
@Html.C1().Resources("default")
@Html.C1().FinanceResources()
Now that we have the project configured, let's add some Model and data to visualise inside FinancialChart. For demo purposes, this sample uses financial data from a JSON file named BOX.JSON.

This example uses a simple model of stock data.
public class FinanceData
{
public DateTime X { get; set; }
public double High { get; set; }
public double Low { get; set; }
public double Open { get; set; }
public double Close { get; set; }
public double Volume { get; set; }
}
Next, we need a repository to get data.
public class BoxData
{
public static List GetDataFromJson() {
string path=HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/Content/box.json");
string jsonText=new StreamReader(path, System.Text.Encoding.Default).ReadToEnd();
JArray ja = (JArray)JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(jsonText);
List list = new List();
foreach (var obj in ja) {
DateTime date = Convert.ToDateTime(obj["date"].ToString());
double high = Convert.ToDouble(obj["high"].ToString());
double low = Convert.ToDouble(obj["low"].ToString());
double open = Convert.ToDouble(obj["open"].ToString());
double close = Convert.ToDouble(obj["close"].ToString());
double volume = Convert.ToDouble(obj["volume"].ToString());
list.Add(new FinanceData { X = date, High = high, Low = low, Open = open, Close = close, Volume = volume });
}
return list;
}
}
Return Model data from "BoxData" repository in the "Index action"
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.Mvc;
using FinanceDemo.Models;
namespace FinanceDemo.Controllers
{
public class FinanceController : Controller
{
// GET: Finance
public ActionResult Index()
{
var model = BoxData.GetDataFromJson();
return View(model);
}
}
}
Add View, right-click Finance Folder inside View -> Add View -> Name View as "Index".
@using FinanceDemo.Models
@model List
@{
ViewBag.Title = "Index";
}

Add Line Markers to display data points when the mouse is hovered over the data series. In FinancialChart, you can add line markers using AddLineMarker method. Markers also support optional vertical and horizontal lines to enable a cross-hair effect.
<script><br/> function lineMarkerContent(ht, pt) {<br/> var item = ht.series.collectionView.items[ht.pointIndex];<br/> if (item) {<br/> return 'Date: ' + wijmo.Globalize.format(ht.x, 'MMM-dd') + '<br/>' +<br/> 'High: ' + item.High.toFixed() + '<br/>' +<br/> 'Low: ' + item.Low.toFixed() + '<br/>' +<br/> 'Open: ' + item.Open.toFixed() + '<br/>' +<br/> 'Close: ' + item.Close.toFixed() + '<br/>' +<br/> 'Volume: ' + item.Volume.toFixed();<br/> }<br/> }<br/></script>
@(Html.C1().FinancialChart()
.Bind(Model)
.BindingX("X")
.ChartType(C1.Web.Mvc.Finance.ChartType.HeikinAshi)
.Series(ser =>
{
ser.Add().Binding("High,Low,Open,Close");
})
.AddLineMarker(lm => lm
.Alignment(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerAlignment.Auto)
.Lines(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerLines.Both)
.DragContent(true)
.Interaction(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerInteraction.Move).Content("lineMarkerContent")))
)
FinancialChart also supports range selectors to drill through data over a period. Range Selector Demo>>
FinancialChart has various analytic tools, you could apply Moving Average to analyze data points by creating a series of averages of different subsets of the full data set. TrendLines to represent trends in data and to examine problems of prediction. Fibonacci tool enables the calculation and plotting of various alert levels that are useful in financial charts. This example shows how to configure a Exponential Moving Average over a Line chart
@(Html.C1().FinancialChart()
.Bind(Model)
.BindingX("X")
.ChartType(C1.Web.Mvc.Finance.ChartType.Line)
.Series(ser =>
{
ser.Add().Binding("High,Low,Open,Close");
ser.AddMovingAverage().Binding("Close").Type(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.MovingAverageType.Exponential);
})
.AddLineMarker(lm => lm
.Alignment(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerAlignment.Auto)
.Lines(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerLines.Both)
.DragContent(true)
.Interaction(C1.Web.Mvc.Chart.LineMarkerInteraction.Move).Content("lineMarkerContent"))
)
Moving Average The analytics is built into the series of FinancialChart, similar to Moving Average example a Fibonacci Tool can be added to the series collection as below:
ser.AddFibonacci().Binding("Close").Uptrend(true);
A TrendLine for "Close" can be added to the series collection as below:
ser.AddTrendLine().Binding("Close");
