March 2011 Speaking Engagements

March is a crazy month! My busiest one in my short career at ComponentOne, I’ll be all over the country this month.

codepaLOUsa

I start March with a trip back to my hometown of Louisville, KY and the first codepaLOUsa. ComponentOne is a sponsor, and Kara and I will be working the booth—stop by and see what’s cool (we have some cool stuff).

206 - Connecting Windows Phone 7 to Microsoft Azure using WCF

Windows Phone 7 and Azure are hot topics this year, and the two together is a winning combination. In this session, we'll have a short overview of Azure and WCF, then look at the free tools and guidelines used to build applications for WP7 (you don't even need a phone to get started). We'll then dig in and create a WCF service backed by SQL Azure, then create a WP7 app to consume the service and display the data.

308 - Is Azure Right for My Applications

What is Microsoft Azure? Is Azure right for my applications? Do I have to use .NET, or can I develop in PHP or Java? What level of calculus do I need to figure out the billing? These questions and more answered by an experienced enterprise developer and co-author of Microsoft Azure: Enterprise Application Development.

We'll look at the features of Azure, how they can be used together or individually, and we'll examine the libraries and tools useful in building, debugging and managing applications on the Azure platform. Along the way, we'll look behind the scenes of a production Azure application to see how all the pieces fit together.

Utah Code Camp

The next stop is Utah Code Camp. ComponentOne is a sponsor, and Steve and I will be working the table. I’m presenting one talk:

Steve is also presenting a talk:

Silverlight 101: Back to the Basics

Want to learn Silverlight? Join me as I take you through the basics of developing a Silverlight application. We'll focus on the capabilities of Silverlight 4.0, but also touch on Silverlight before it's latest release. Discover ways to la yout your Silverlight application, connect to data, and design. We'll also touch on what's required to set up a development environment, the steps necessary for application development, and concluding with Silverlight resource references.

Orlando Code Camp

The final week of March begins with Orlando Code Camp. ComponentOne is a sponsor, and Raleigh Johnson and I will be working the table. I’m presenting two talks:

What is WebMatrix?

Microsoft's WebMatrix is a new, lightweight website development suite. The development environment includes tools for creating new websites, installing applications from the Web Gallery, creating/managing databases, and analyzing a site for SEO and performance issues. In addition to the IDE, the suite includes IIS Express, SQL CE 4 and Razor view syntax. In addition to databases, WebMatrix includes resources to provide simple support for OData and Azure Storage. The functionality of WebMatrix-built websites can be extended with a number of partner-provided or custom built helpers, and additional functionality can be added with NuGet packages. In this session, we'll dive into the features of WebMatrix, and look at how to get started managing databases and building websites.

Raleigh is also presenting a talk, “Configuring Forms Authentication is SharePoint 2010”. Raleigh is one of our Technical Engagement Engineers, primarily responsible for top level SharePoint projects and support.

In this session, we will discuss Forms Based Authentication (FBA)—why you’d want to use it, what can it do, and how to configure your SharePoint portal to use FBA. Along the way, we will look at some of the common problems that you will face while configuring FBA, and discuss some of the available tools that can help simplify the configuration process.

DevConnections

I’m not speaking at DevConnections, and although ComponentOne is as sponsor, we’re not having a booth this time. Instead, Raleigh and I will be wandering around, attending talks and passing out swag. Follow @ComponentOne on Twitter to see where we are and claim some swag.

I look forward to seeing everyone when we’re out and about this month. Stay classy developers!
