Resolving "installation of Microsoft Help Viewer 1.0 is not complete" error

This is the solution if you've received the following error message when installing ComponentOne help:

The installation of Microsoft HelpViewer 1.0 is not complete, and ComponentOne local help cannot be merged into the Visual Studio catalog.

The entire message looks like the pop-up below: helperror1 The problem is that during Visual Studio 2010 installation, the Visual Studio help location was set to online, rather than local, and our help need a local help catalog (this is one reason why the installers for the components and help are separated). Here are the steps to resolve this issue, and install ComponentOne help locally:

  1. Go to your computer's control panel and uninstall any failed help files. Leave the components, they're fine, just get rid of the help installations.
  2. Open Visual Studio 2010 and go Help >> Manage Help Settings helperror2
  3. The Help Library Manager window opens, and we need to perform two actions from this menu. First, click on "Choose online or local help". helperror3
  4. Here, choose "I want to use local help". If you're prompted to enter a library location, the default path is probably your best choice. Click OK, your setting will be saved and you'll be back at the Help Library Manager. helperror4
  5. In order to generate a local catalog, at least one help file needs to be installed locally. Click on "Install content from online". A list of the help files will be retrieved. Note that VS 2010 help files can be MASSIVE, and take a considerable amount of time to download and install. If you scroll slightly to the right, you'll see the sizes of the files. Choose anything small, some of the SDKs toward the bottom of the list are around 23 MB. When you find a file to download, click the Add link. helperror5
  6. The local help catalog will be created, and the local library will be updated. helperror6
  7. Once this is complete, exit the Help Library Manager, close Visual Studio, and now you can install ComponentOne help.
