If an argument to the PRODUCT or SUM function is an array or reference, only numbers in that array of reference are counted. Empty cells, logical values, or text values in the array or reference are ignored.  This is the way that Excel defines these functions.  A common mistake when using these functions is to pass in text values that look like numbers (e.g. "123").  How are you filling the grid the second time?  If filling via keyboard entry then what is the cell type of the cells?  A TextCellType would cause string values to be entered via keyboard.  If filling via application code then are you using Text or Value properties?  A Value property assignment like Value = "123" would cause a string value to be entered.  If filling via data binding than what is the data type of the columns in the data source?  A column of string values in the data source will result in a column of string values in the grid.
