ARviewer very slow on some machines

Hi there - hope someone can help.

I apologise in advance if this is something really simple but were pretty new to ActiveReports - this may have been covered somewhere before.

We use IE on several machines to access reports stored on our webserver as rdf files.

On some machines the reports appear instantly, on others there is a 30+ second delay (with the scrolling ActiveReports icon) before the reports appear.

At first I thought it was our reports that were at fault but the same thing happens (on the same machines) if I copy the samples folder installed with ActiveReports on my development machine over to the local drive on the 'problem' machine and attempt to view the reports from there.

I have checked the configuration of the machines and they are all running IE6 SP1 and appear to be identical.

The cab file for the ARViewer is stored on the webserver and seems to download and install on the machines when I access the report pages for the first time.

This is not related to the processor / memory of the machines (I have an old P2 300 Laptop with 64Mb RAM  which works fine but a brand new 1.4Ghz machine with 512Mb RAM takes almost a minute to show the report.

Please help - I'm running out of ideas.

    Cheers,

    Mike

    Hello Mike--

Can you tell me more about your reports are you using images?

If so do you see increase in performance when you don't use images?

    Are you using subreports?

Are the reports bound or unbound?

    It's not the reports.

I get exactly the same problem if I try to view the top10.rdf report sample that gets installed with ActiveReports. As you know this is a very simple report with no graphics.

One thing I have noticed is that if I comment out the Sub window_onload procedure from the ActiveX.htm file (from the samples folder) so the datapath of the report viewer is not loaded with the web page, the report viewer itself seems to load ok. But when selecting (any) report type from the dropdown list there is a 30+ second delay before the report is shown.....BUT...selecting any subsequent report there is no delay.

The thing I don't understand is that it doesn't make any difference which report I select first, there is always a delay, but selecting any subsequent report, including those with graphics there is no delay at all.

    Any ideas ?

    Cheers,

    Mike

    Hello Mike--

Can you tell me more about the machines that this is loading slow on?

Does it seem to be a particular OS or if the machine doesn't have so much memory and etc?

What is different about the machines that this loads fine on and the ones that it does not?

What build of ActiveReports are you using to test this with?

Any other differences or suggestions that you can offer to help me reproduce this would be great.

Could it have something to do with having the NET framework installed? I am having the same problem and under NT it worked fine, Win2k worked fine, Win2k with .NET framework seems to be where things started to happen, or not happen.

If it’s a single machine it could be related to software on that machine, such as anti-virus or a local firewall. If it’s all machines at a particular location, it might be the network settings, routing rules, or some kind of firewall, here for more info try https://www.asussupportnumber.com/blog/fix-asus-live-update-failed-to-connect-issues/
